"CSR is a relatively recent concept in Latin America. This essay presents an overview of the CSRmovement in this region. It first of all examines the historical-religious and -cultural background of the concept and states that CSR is still strongly associated with philanthropy. Philanthropy, however, is very often rooted in religious traditions and became an important corporate instrument for social engagement. Secondly, it explores currently relevant macrostructural conditions of the region which are embedding the CSR and requiring a change from a myopic and spontaneous corporate philanthropy to a holistic CSR perspecitve with sustainable social engagement. Thirdly, the essay focuses on the so called CSR-Promoters commitment which consists of promoting and encouraging CSR initiatives in the region. Finally, this essay underlines that companies have to define the CSR concept both as business- case and as development-case. The two approaches are not mutually exclusive."
