The Urabá-Darién region, located in the northwest of Colombia, is one of the richest and most biologically diverse areas of the world. However, during the past few years, this zone has been the epicenter of a serious humanitarian crisis, and its ecosystem is in danger due to industrialization prospects in the area. Urabá has been transformed into a favored site for the development of projects and megaprojects with strong social and environmental impacts. The express objective of these businesses is to “uncork” the Darién and bridge,in this way, the barrier of rainforest that impedes any direct communication between the two halves of the American continent, as well as to provide industrial and transportation infrastructures to the area. This article would like to propose an alternative understanding of the reasons that, historically, have justified these connection plans, showing that they do not actually correspond to the wish to give the local population a massive and commercial public transportation system. Instead, these projects must be interpreted as an answer to the demands of internal and continental security.... view less
