Zukünftige Veränderungen in Ostdeutschland

In the early 1990s there were still marked differences in quality between the housing
stock of eastern and western Germany. The reason was to be found in the very different
attitudes to house building, in terms of both scale and structure, following the Second
World War. A number of radical changes have taken place since the mid-’90s. In eastern
Germany, high levels of housing construction coupled with a decline in the population
have left vast numbers of dwellings now standing empty. At the same time, high
levels of investment in the building stock have led to significant improvements in the
quality of the building fabric and in the standard of the features and fittings of those
buildings and dwellings that are occupied. One further factor which has contributed to
improving the overall quality of the building stock is the successful removal of nonrefurbished
buildings as part of the Stadtumbau Ost programme. However, changes to
the structure of buildings, i.e. the proportion of single-, two-, or multi-family houses,
take place only very slowly. Future changes in eastern Germany will come about principally
through the large-scale removal of multi-family housing blocks, and less as a
result of the construction of single-family housing. The enormous differences in the size
of dwellings will however persist into the future.... view less
