Prosumers, swarms, crowds, e-movements, e-communities - the Web offers a new sphere of action for a great variety of collective actors situated between individuals
and organizations. However, aside from cursory descriptions and visionary narratives, a robust classification of these different types of collectiveness is still missing. This
paper investigates how the Internet transforms collective behavior and collective action, exploring the questions: How can online-based social formations be analyzed
and classified in terms of actor-centered social theory? How do they gain or lose stability? What organizational patterns do they adopt? To what extent is the development of collective actors shaped by the technological infrastructures they are embedded
in? After an overview of new collective formations in the Internet age, we examine the existing literature on social actors, strategic action and autodynamic coordination
to identify their specific characteristics.},
