%X 'The first section provides an analytical scheme for the study of technical associations. Their interests and activities are classified according to four major areas: professional interests; economic interests; regulation of technical standards; production and diffusion of knowledge. Sections 2 and 3 analyse in more detail two of these areas. 'Regulation of technical standards' deals with the technical associations as they were involved in matters of safety control, testing of materials, and standardization. 'Promotion of research' considers the technical associations as they took part in the production of knowledge. They did so by formulating problems and by organizing research.' (author's abstract)
