Während die groben Umrisse der Ausdehnung der Alphabetisierung bekannt sind, gibt es immer noch viele offene Fragen über die Verbreitung von Lesen und Schreiben. In dem Beitrag werden einige neuere französische Quellen (Aufzeichnungen der Gerichte und des Zensus) untersucht und die Verbreitung des Alphabetismus anhand von Geschlecht, Region und Alter analysiert. Die komplexe Diskussion sozioökonomischer Faktoren, die das Lesen und Schreiben fördern oder verzögern, konzentriert sich auf den Gedanken der kulturellen Umgebung, von dem ausgehend eine Geographie des Alphbetismus entwickelt wird.
