It is made clear that cultural landscapes can primarily be divided into two basic groups. The first is the “simple” cultural landscape that is seen as a spatially structuring subspace that is to be preserved and developed. The second is a smaller, historically influenced and evolved cultural landscape, the essential features of which are to only be preserved. The cultural landscape tenet with its preservation and development mandate as laid out in spatial planning law thus has considerable potential for tackling specific spatial problems, and this despite the not unproblematic jurisdiction issues. This is also true for suburban space, although in formally legal terms it does not represent a special case for the cultural landscape mandate.... view less
