Long-term fluctuations of economic growth and social destabilization

Abstract

Die Untersuchung verfolgt zwei Ziele. Zum einen wird ein Datensatz zu wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Indikatoren vorgelegt, die sich auf die Entwicklung des Kantons Zürich in den Jahren zwischen 1832 und 1983 beziehen. Zum anderen werden auf der Basis empirisch vorfindbarer Strukturen Aspekte einer Theorie sozialen Wandels diskutiert. Die Ergebnisse sprechen für eine Strategie der historischen Sozialforschung, bei der kulturelle, politische, soziale und wirtschaftliche Indikatoren für ein bestimmtes Gebiet zusammengefaßt werden. Diese Daten können dann Gegenstand einer statistischen Analyse werden. (ICEÜbers)

'The following article combines two objectives. First it presents a data-set of economic and social indicators which relate to the development of the canton of Zurich from 1832 to 1983. Second it discusses some empirical patterns discernible in the data in order to test some aspects of a theory of social change. The results seem to support a strategy in historical social research that accumulates related cultural, political, social and economic indicators for a limited area. These may then be examined by available statistical methods.' (author's abstract)
