 abstract = {Objective: Investigate nurses' understanding of palliative care. Method: Qualitative study conducted in April and May 2011 with six nurses from the UTI of a public hospital in João Pessoa/PB. We used a questionnaire containing data characterizing the sample and three guiding questions.The data were analyzed according to the Collective Subject Discourse technique. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the College of Santa Emilia Rodat, N° 014/2011. Result: Central ideas identified: 1) multidisciplinary actions to promote well-being of patients and their families by relieving pain and physical problems, psychosocial and spiritual. 2) actions that provide comfort and pain relief. 3) significant care and patient and famílianecessários year, by Profissionais of saúde, aiming morteumador and sofrimento week.
