(Autorenreferat)... view less

"Regarding medical decisions at the end of life, generally distinction is made between active, passive, and indirect euthanasia. This distinction is based primarily on jurisdiction and is discussed controversially. The authors asked German physicians and judges to classify end-of-life treatment decisions with regard to their own distinction between active and passive euthanasia and whether they distinguish between withholding and withdrawal of treatment. A questionnaire-based survey was sent to 1254 judges and 1557 physicians. Participants were asked to assign five terminal care measures to different modes of euthanasia, drawing on their personal perspective. The answers have been heterogeneous and influenced by moral and emotional involvement. From a legal point of view, all these measures represented passive euthanasia, which is admissible in Germany."
