"The issue of this paper is the phenomenon that despite a 'post-social' refiguration of the field of crime control, the significance of the ‘welfarist’ institution of Social Work is not substantially declining. Social Work does not constitute a welfarist antagonism resisting a shift away from the idea of ‘the Social’, nor does Social Work forfeit its rehabilitative ‘people changing’ orientation and function. Rather the dynamics of the field of crime control seem to be more complex than the debates on a development towards a post-social punitive risk-management imply. Against this background Social Work can be understood as a productive agency rather than antipode of current re-arrangements in the public governance of welfare and crime control."
