(Autorenreferat)... view less

"This study is the first attempt to investigate the typology of couples proposed by Gottman (1993) in a representative Swiss sample including more than 1.700 subjects. Gottman assumed that validator, volatile and avoider couples constitute functional, satisfied and stable relationships whereas two forms of dysfunctional types of couples (hostile and hostile-detached) couples may be distinguished. The results of this study replicate the previous finding by Gottman (1993, 1994) indicating that all three types of functional couples reported significantly higher scores with regard to marital satisfaction, positive communication behaviors and dyadic coping whereas hostile and hostile-detached couples were characterized by higher scores in negativity. It is noteworthy that within the types of functional couples, volatile couples reported the highest scores in nearly all positive variables indicating that this type of relationship is more vital and passionate than the others."
