This paper draws on the concept of life styles in order to investigate social-space phenomena. It examines whether life styles, independently of classical inequality criteria, are capable of explaining the choice of where to live, and whether any lifestyle-specific requirements are identifiable. The database is provided by a representative poll carried out in Western Germany with over 2,000 respondents. Results are presented on urban-rural distribution and on inner-city residential locations for six selected life-style groups (high-culture type; modern self-realisational type; pragmatic, quality-conscious type; entertainment and experience type; traditionally integrated type; and passive, reclusive type). Even though there are differences in the distribution of these life-style types over the location types, clear locational patterns are not evident for every life-style group (e.g. pragmatic type). In multi-variant models, summarising this representative and thus supra-locally relevant study, it becomes apparent that the nature of the household or family unit is just as powerful an indicator for the choice of place of residence as income or professional prestige.... view less
