(prg)... view less

'The article deals with a small yet powerful group of elderly people during the time of the Republic of Weimar. These so-called 'Kleinrentner' (persons with small pensions) were people who in old age, due to the dependancy on their savings, had been impoverished as consequence of the great inflation which took place during the Republic of Weimar. Blaming the government for the loss of their money they put in claims for compensation. The government, though being unable to meet with the demands of this particular group, tried hard to provide for them by granting a subsistance on the basis of welfare, a complex system of benefits developed in those years. But the beneficiaries were repelled by the very idea of welfare, and they wanted what they thought their due. Disappointed by the political parties which had failed to give them substantial help they possibly fell prey to the promises of Hitler's Nazi-Party. The final question is: Have they been frustrated enough to vote for Hitler?' (author's abstract)... view less
