(Autorenreferat)... view less

"Parent and family education may be a current focus of social work and family policy debates, but the needs and situation of families with migrant backgrounds are scarcely taken into account. This is incomprehensible in face of the fact that people with a family history of migration account for about 20% of the population. Families with a migrant backgrounds as well as families without a history of migration have to cope with difficult situations in various guises: unemployment, occupational illness, problems with accessing education and hostility to foreigners particularly affect migrant families. Indigenous families are somewhat less confronted by unemployment, nevertheless workplace demands and occupational mobility overburden families and the demands of a successful family life are unrealistically high. These articles examine the ways in which migrant and indigenous families attempt to cope with challenging situations and consider what the consequences are for concepts of intercultural work with parents. It is clear that a successful process of migration as well as a positive experience of social change in families is certainly a lot to expect. Parents and couples have to be supported in order to ensure that children can develop well. Community work is particularly significant for the management of change processes as well as intercultural family education. Different forms of counselling, neighbourhood activities, programmes of courses, educational leave and leisure pursuits can all be appropriate methods for this work." (author´s abstract)... view less
