'After in October, 1989, there had at first been demands for a reform of society in the GDR, from November on the goals presented by the people on the one hand and by socialist intellectuals on the other became inceasingly different. If a majority of the people was now demanding German unity, intellectuals mostly spoke out for democratic socialism in a still independent GDR. This way they actually came closer to SED positions and thus spoilt the opportunity to be accepted as the new leading elite by the people. From November on, the latter rather set their hopes on Federal Republican politicians and their East German representatives who by supporting the German unity made themselves the advocates of the people's wishes. Due to this, most of all the CDU was able to clearly win the first democratic elections in the history of the GDR in March, 1990.' (author's abstract)|... view less
