Abstract	"In der erneut anschwellenden Debatte um das Für und Wider direkter Demokratie als einer Ergänzung des repräsentativ-demokratischen Systems gibt es keinen argumentativen Fortschritt. In dieser festgefahrenen Lage kann dreierlei hilfreich sein: die Tiefenstruktur der argumentativen Auseinandersetzung zu beleuchten, problematische argumentative Strategien und einen fragwürdigen Umgang mit empirischen Hinweisen zu benennen und den gleichermaßen von starren Prinzipien wie spekulativen Prognosen geprägten Streit um mehr direkte Demokratie durch eine experimentelle, aber zeitlich zunächst begrenzte Praxis zu entschärfen." [Autorenreferat] " There is hardly any progress in the newly revitalised debate on the pros and cons of direct democracy as a complement to the representative democratic system. In such a situation of stalemate and redundancy of the debate, a threefold approach may be useful: first, to shed some light on the underlying basic assumptions of the explicit arguments; second, to name and blame some problematic strategic manoeuvres and the highly selective use of empirical reference points; finally, an experimental introduction of instruments of direct democracy in order to put an end to a struggle marked by dogmas and speculation" [author's abstract]
