"Value change has become a growing field of research, however, there are only few empirical approaches to closed systems, such as esoteric sects, discrete societies, or exclusive orders. Freemasons find themselves in a special position: On the one hand they appear as registered associations in the German public, on the other all Freemasons in the world are obliged to respect the 'masonic secret' and are thus under taboo for social scientific research. Based on the analysis of the magazine of the largest German Grand Loge, i.e. on the review of its editorials, articles, reports, comments, decrees and letters, published or issued respectively over several five-year intervals, this study provides for an introduction to the temporal, i.e. social and political feeling and thinking of German Freemasons. For this purpose, the semantic essence of all texts under review has been extracted, quantified, scaled up and categorized into value domains. The result is amazing: Masons are conform with the general value change but have become involved in adverse, inconsistent or asymmetrical effects contrary to a continuous process of change."
