Drawing on Bakhtin and Goffman: toward an epistemology that makes lived experience visible

Abstract

In diesem Beitrag versuchen wir zu zeigen, in welcher Weise qualitative Forschung profitieren kann, wenn sie die Arbeiten GOFFMANs mit denen BAKHTINs verknüpft werden. Ziel ist es, einen Ansatz zur Interpretation menschlichen Handelns zu eröffnen, der unmittelbare Erfahrung fokussiert. BAKHTIN hat sich mit deren Analyse befasst, aber sein Werk war bei seinem Tod unvollständig. Ansätze zur Vervollständigung finden sich in frühen Arbeiten BAKHTINs zur Interpretation von Poetik. In dem Artikel skizzieren wir, in welcher Weise er sich mit Inhalt, Form und Material in der Kunst befasst hat und wie dies auf die Reflexion epistemologischer Praxis mit Menschen bezogen werden kann. Um unseren Ansatz zu veranschaulichen, ziehen wir exemplarisch Material aus einer Interaktion zwischen der Zweitautorin und einem anonymen Online-Spieler heran.

This article seeks to enrich qualitative analysis by way of showing how Erving GOFFMAN's work can be enhanced by interfacing it with Mikhail BAKHTIN. The goal is to inspire an approach to the interpretation of human action that highlights phenomenologically immediate experience, thereby enhancing current work. BAKHTIN's later work focused on the interpretation of such experience but it was left incomplete at the time of his death. Fortunately, this latter work is reminiscent of his early work on the interpretation of poetics. The article addresses BAKHTIN's discussion of content, form, and material in art and how this discussion can enlighten our epistemological praxis with persons. By way of a demonstration, our proposed approach is applied to an online interaction between the second author and an anonymous online gamer.

Este artículo busca enriquecer el análisis cualitativo al exponer cómo el trabajo de Erving GOFFman puede enriquecerse al enfrentarlo con Mikhail BAKHTIN. La meta es inspirar una aproximacion a la interpretacion de la accion humana que resalte fenomenológicamente la experiencia inmediata, y consecuentemente enriquecer el trabajo actual. El trabajo tardío de BAKHTIN se enfocó a la interpretación de tal experiencia pero permaneció incompleto cuando él murió. Afortunadamente, este trabajo tardío es reminiscente de su trabajo temprano sobre la interpretacion de la poesía. Este artículo aborda la discusión de BAKHTIN sobre el contenido, la forma y el material en el arte y como este debate puede iluminar nuestra praxis epistemológica con las personas. Como demostración, se aplica nuestro enfoque a una interacción en linea entre el segundo autor y un jugador anónimo en línea.
