'In this article, I explore the question of how to determine the relationship between the concept of family and theories of justice. I present issues of concern and the position the concept of family can have within a theory of justice. I analyze the concept of family in two prominent theories of justice (Rawl's 'A Theory of Justice' and Walzer's 'Spheres of Justice'). The analysis shows that there is some doubt regarding the compatibility of justice with family structure, although both theories assign an important role to families. I hereby demonstrate that the concept of family can and should play an important role in the conceptualization of social justice. After that, I try to show that the concept of family can also be reconsidered by using alternative scenarios ('utopias') that show a destruction of our understanding of family. I draw on utopias by Huxley ('Brave New World') and Orwell ('1984'). In conclusion I discuss how an ethics of community can close the gap between the concepts of family and justice.'
