'An empirical case is analyzed to show how generational differences are dealt with in families' dining table rituals. Since institutional frameworks and traditional bonds alone are not a sufficient guarantee for their community and coherence as a group, families as acting institutions rely on rituals not only to enact their sense of belonging, but to generate it on a day-to-day basis. Rituals, therefore, are constitutive elements of family life and can be seen, in line with Pierre Bourdieu, as performative acts in which families symbolicly work out their differences and individual members learn from each other. The effect of social magic is to allow families to become what they are at the dining table. The qualitative reconstruction of ritual self-education shows that while boundaries drawn at the table are tied to familial authority patterns, it is at the table that the solidarity of the family is kept intact.'
