(Autorenreferat)... view less

'Modern health discourses have adopted the dialectic of enlightenment. When, with the emergence of a modern understanding of man and world, health and illness were increasingly seen as amenable to the influence of individual and social action, this also marked the beginning of the rise of modern medicine as the agent of societal control over health and illness. Health promotion in terms of the Ottawa Charta seeks to re-invest subjects with health-geared self-efficacy and social agency. Concepts of health promotion combined with research on identity formation currently conducted in the social sciences have favoured the emergence of innovative perspectives in the health sciences, with the concept of salutogenesis and its focus on the principle of coherence as a major link. This concept, however, needs to be re-framed in terms of modern reflexive theory, as opposed to the frameworks of traditional identity concepts.' (author's abstract)|... view less
