Abstract The concept of social network which is rarely used in German social science literature, is introduced emphasizing recent advances of social anthropological research. Some important dimensions of social networks are described. Finally, the potential utility of the concept is discussed.

Das in der deutschsprachigen Literatur wenig gebräuchliche Konzept des sozialen Netzwerks wird vorgestellt, wobei besonders neuere Entwicklungen der Sozialanthropologie berücksichtigt werden. Einige Dimensionen sozialer Netzwerke werden beschrieben. Schließlich wird diskutiert, welche Funktionen das Konzept des sozialen Netzwerks erfüllen könnte.
