'In der vorliegenden Studie wurde über den Zeitraum der Jahrgangsstufen 5 bis 7 untersucht, wie sich die schulischen Leistungen bei Schülerinnen und Schülern in homogenen Begabtenklassen eines Gymnasiums im Vergleich zu regulären Gymnasialklassen darstellen. In standardisierten Leistungstests erzielten die Schülerinnen und Schüler in den Begabtenklassen durchgängig bessere Leistungen in den Bereichen Rechtschreiben, Mathematik und Englisch als diejenigen der Vergleichsklassen. Zu Beginn der 7. Klasse war dieser Leistungsvorsprung in Mathematik teilweise auf den höheren Anteil an Jungen in den Begabtenklassen zurückzuführen. Unter Berücksichtigung der Geschlechtsverteilung in den Klassen als Kovariate zeigten sich dagegen keine bedeutsamen Unterschiede in den Jahreszeugnisnoten der Fächer Deutsch, Englisch und Mathematik. 'In this study effects of ability grouping were assessed in students of a German gymnasium (junior high school), focusing an developmental trends in academic performance between grades 5 and 7. As a major result, gifted students instructed in special classrooms performed better than students instructed in regular gymnasium classrooms, regardless of the performance in math, English, or spelling. As indicated by additional analyses, gifted students' better performance in math was related to a larger proportion of males in the special as compared to the gender proportion in regular classrooms. Interestingly, average grades in German, English, and mathematics did not differ between the two types of classrooms after controlling for gender. On the one hand, these findings indicate that outcomes in standardized tests are better suited to assess academic achievement in secondary school students than grades. On the other hand, the results also confirm the assumption that ability grouping generates positive effects.' (author's abstract)... view less
