Abstract Die gegenwärtige Entwicklung der Mobilität und damit verbunden auch die Entwicklung des Raumes ist gekennzeichnet durch das ambivalente Spannungsfeld von synchronen Ver- und Enträumlichungstendenzen. Auf der einen Seite ist ein klar wahrnehmbarer Bedeutungszuwachs von Strömen im Sinne von Datenströmen und Ähnlichem zu konstatieren, der vor allem aus dem die Spätmoderne prägenden Übergang von der Industrie- zur Wissens- und Informationsgesellschaft resultiert. Auf der anderen Seite scheint jedoch auch der Raum weiter an Bedeutung hinzuzugewinnen und der Raum der Ströme scheint insofern kein ortloser Raum zu sein, was sich beispielsweise vor allem auch in der zu beobachtenden Metropolpolitik, aber auch an einem Festhalten der Raumordnung am Ziel gleichwertiger Lebensverhältnisse deutlich zeigt. Es besteht insofern offenkundig ein deutlicher Zusammenhang zwischen dem Raum der Ströme und dem Raum des Ortes, innerhalb derer sich sehr spezifische Muster und Ausprägungen von Mobilität entwickeln, aus denen sich wiederum klare Anforderungen und Herausforderungen für die Gesellschaft und die Planung ergeben.

The current development of mobility and connected to this the spatial development are characterised by a complex antagonism of spatialisation on the one hand and the decline of the importance of the spatial area on the other hand. Considered differentiatedly in this context an increasing importance of streams for the purpose of data streams and information e. g. can be observed as well as an increasing importance of areas, which is expressed for example in the metropolitan policy. The increasing importance of streams is primarily the result of a change from an industrial society to knowledge and information society, which characterises the late modern clearly. In addition the area recovers initially more importance. The space of flows is no placeless space so far. So far there is obviously a clear link between the space of flows and the space of the place, within the very specific patterns and characteristics of mobility development from which in turn result clear requirements and challenges for society and spatial planning.
