Qualitative archives and biographical research methods: an introduction to the FQS special issue

Abstract

Die Nutzung von Archivmaterial für sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung setzt voraus, dass sich eine Kultur der Archivierung (und der Re- und Sekundärnutzung von Daten) bereits etabliert hat. Ein solcher Ansatz und eine entsprechende Forschungspraxis ist zunächst vor allem bezogen auf Statistiken, Umfragen und ähnliche Primär- und Sekundärdokumente entstanden. Im Unterschied hierzu geschieht es sehr viel seltener, dass das zumeist sehr elaborierte Datenmaterial, das im Zuge qualitativer Forschungsarbeiten erhoben wird, für den Zweck späterer Reanalysen archiviert wird. Hierzu gehört eine Dokumentation der Praktiken und Erfahrungen im Forschungsalltag von Projekten, ebenso betrifft dies Feldnotizen, Audio- und Videoaufzeichnungen und überhaupt jede Art von Dokumenten, die im Forschungsprozess produziert werden. Insgesamt bietet diese Schwerpunktausgabe ein breites und hoffentlich anregendes Spektrum an Artikeln, die sich mit den Erfahrungen, Herausforderungen und Potenzialen der Archivierung und Nachnutzung qualitativer Daten befassen, und dies insbesondere mit Blick auf biografische und Erzählforschung. Ein wesentliches Anliegen ist für uns, mehr Aufmerksamkeit auf die Bedeutung der Archivierung von Daten auch im Bereich qualitativer Sozialforschung zu lenken. Hierzu werden methodologische Reflexionen und Forschungsansätze vorgestellt, die im Rahmen der europäischen sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung entstanden sind und weiter entwickelt werden. Wir hoffen, dass die hier versammelten Beiträge helfen, Kommunikation und Austausch zu diesen wichtigen Fragen in unterschiedlichen nationalen und disziplinären Kontexten voranzutreiben.

The use of archival materials as a point of departure when designing and launching social research takes for granted that a culture of archiving (for sharing and re-use) has rooted time ago in our complex societies. This mentality and research practice first flourished and is fairly well installed in the case of statistics, surveys and certain other primary or secondary documents. On the contrary, it is less frequent and certainly not a routine activity for qualitative data. Only some of the raw and elaborated materials gathered during qualitative research become part of an archive for further reanalysis. These can include the backstage practices and experiences of a project, raw materials such as field notes, audio and visual recordings, and other documents produced during the research process. This issue presents a colorful range of articles that deal with experiences, challenges and opportunities of archiving and re-using qualitative material, particularly under the umbrella of biographical and narrative research. It aims to raise awareness of the importance of archiving in qualitative social research and highlights some of the new methodological reflections and approaches that have been and that are being developed within the European landscape. We hope that the articles in this issue will help promote further communication and exchange among qualitative archival practitioners from different countries and with different sensitivities and conceptual horizons.

El uso de materiales de archivo como punto de partida al diseñar y acometer la investigación social da por supuesto que en nuestras sociedades complejas ha echado raíces hace tiempo una cultura de archivo (para compartir y reusar). Esta mentalidad y práctica de investigación se ha desarrollado primero y está bien asentada en el caso de las estadísticas, encuestas y otros documentos primarios o secundarios. En cambio, es menos frecuente y ciertamente no una actividad rutinaria por lo que respecta a los datos cualitativos. Únicamente algunos de los materiales primarios y elaborados que se reúnen durante la investigación cualitativa pasan a formar parte de un archivo para su ulterior re-análisis. Pueden ser prácticas y experiencias de trastienda de un proyecto, materiales en bruto tales como notas de campo, grabaciones de audio y visuales, y otros documentos producidos a lo largo del proceso de investigación.Este volumen presenta una variopinta gama de artículos que abordan experiencias, desafíos y oportunidades de archivo y re-uso de material cualitativo, particularmente bajo el paraguas de la investigación biográfico-narrativa. Pretende avivar la conciencia de la importancia de archivar en la investigación social cualitativa, al tiempo que resalta algunas de las reflexiones y aproximaciones que han sido y están siendo desarrolladas dentro del panorama europeo. Esperamos que los artículos de este volumen ayuden a promover una mayor comunicación e intercambio entre los practicantes del archivo cualitativo de distintos países y con diferentes sensibilidades y horizontes conceptuales.
