Timescapes: living a qualitative longitudinal study

Abstract

Dieser Artikel befasst sich mit "Timescapes: Changing Relationships and Identities Through the Lifecourse", der ersten und in dieser Weise einzigen Forschung in Großbritannien, die (gefördert durch das Economic and Social Research Council) als groß angelegte qualitative Längsschnittstudie konzipiert ist und durchgeführt wird. Die Studie ist verortet in dem Kontext spezifischer Debatten um Archivierung, Sekundär- und Reanalyse qualitativer Daten, und sie leistet wesentliche Beiträge zu all diesen Themenbereichen. Im Sinne einer Forschungs- und Archivierungspraxis kann sie als Modell für sehr große qualitative Längsschnittuntersuchungen dienen. Die Studie besteht aus neun Teilprojekten, die an insgesamt fünf britischen Universitäten angesiedelt sind. Sieben empirische Projekte befassen sich mit Teilen der Lebenslaufs und bilden – auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen integriert – das Gesamt der Studie. Übergreifende Ziel ist die Untersuchung des Wandels von Beziehungen und Identität(en) im Lebenslauf. Kernstück des Längsschnittcharakters der Studie ist der Umgang mit Zeit bzw. die Frage, wie Kontinuität und Wandel über die Zeit so im Design realisiert werden, dass sie zentraler Fokus der analytischen Aufmerksamkeit und konzeptueller Kern der Forschungsarbeit sind. In unserem Fall hat dieses Anliegen auch Eingang bereits in den Titel der Studie erhalten: Ein "timescape" ist eine spezifische zeitliche Perspektive, die einen mikro-zeitlichen Weltausschnitt in den Vordergrund stellt und so – in unserem Fall – Einblick in die dynamische Entfaltung von Alltagsleben erlaubt. Zeitlichkeit, deren unterschiedliche Bedeutungen, die Art und Weise, wie verschiedene Zeiten ineinander verwoben sind und sich herausschälen, ist Kernstück unseres Forschungsinteresses, wobei drei große "timescapes" für uns besonders relevant sind, nämlich eine biografische, eine generationale und eine historische Zeitperspektive. In dem Beitrag wird die konzeptuelle und empirische Basis des Projekts vorgestellt, dessen Beitrag zu einer Methodologie qualitative Längsschnittforschung diskutiert und das Archiv beschrieben, dass zur dauerhaften Datenhaltung und -pflege derzeit aufgebaut wird.

This article introduces and describes Timescapes: Changing Relationships and Identities Through the Lifecourse, the first, indeed the only piece of research in the UK designed and funded (by the Economic and Social Research Council) specifically as a large-scale qualitative longitudinal study. The history of the development of the study places it in a specific context of debates about archiving, secondary analysis and re-use of qualitative data, and the study makes a contribution in all of these areas. As research and archiving practice it presents a model of an approach to large scale qualitative longitudinal research. The study consists of nine projects taking place in five UK universities, with seven empirical projects covering the life course, all integrated at a number of levels to produce the whole study. The broad aim is to investigate the changing nature of relationships and identities over the life course. Qualitative longitudinal research is distinguished by the deliberate way in which temporality is designed into the research process making change and continuity over time a central focus of analytic attention and a conceptual driver. In our case it is also built into the title. A timescape is a temporal vista that brings into focus a micro-temporal view of the world, and can in this way, as in our case, give insight into the dynamic unfolding of real lives. Temporality, its different meanings, and the way different temporalities intersect and play out, is a key part of our investigation. We are critically and particularly interested in three broad timescapes: biographical, generational and historical. The article discusses the conceptual basis of the research, substantive and empirical issues, and the contribution to qualitative longitudinal methodology, as well as the living archive that we are developing to house our data.

Este artículo presenta y describe el proyecto Timescapes: relaciones e identidades cambiantes a través del curso de la vida, la primera, realmente la única investigación en el Reino Unido diseñada y financiada (por el Economic and Social Research Council) específicamente como un estudio longitudinal cualitativo a gran escala. La historia del desarrollo de este estudio lo sitúa en un contexto específico de debates acerca del archivo, análisis secundario y re-utilización de datos cualitativos, y el estudio hace una contribución en todas estas áreas. En tanto que práctica de investigación y archivo presenta un modelo de una aproximación posible a la investigación longitudinal cualitativa a gran escala. El estudio consiste en nueve proyectos que están realizándose en cinco universidades del Reino Unido, con siete proyectos empíricos que cubren el curso de la vida, todos ellos integrados en distintos niveles con objeto de producir un estudio completo. El objetivo general es investigar la naturaleza cambiante de las relaciones e identidades a lo largo del curso de la vida. La investigación longitudinal cualitativa se distingue por la forma deliberada en la que la temporalidad es incorporada en el proceso de investigación, haciendo del cambio y la continuidad a lo largo del tiempo un foco central de atención analítica y una guía conceptual. En nuestro caso, también se entronca en el título. Un timescape (un temporama) es una vista temporal que se concentra en una mirada micro-temporal del mundo y de esta manera permite, como sucede en nuestro caso, acceder a las dinámicas en que se despliegan las vidas reales. La temporalidad, sus distintos significados y las formas en que distintas temporalidades interseccionan y se expresan son una parte fundamental en nuestra investigación. Tenemos un interés crítico y particular en las siguientes tres grandes timescapes (temporamas): biográficos, generacionales e históricos. El artículo plantea la base conceptual de la investigación, aspectos sustantivos y empíricos, la contribución a la metodología cualitativa longitudinal, además del archivo vivo que estamos desarrollando para almacenar nuestros datos.
