'Homeless people come from a variety, of backgrounds and have gone through very different experiences during their life course. Their specific way of life causes frequent contacts with the police. In addition, an the institutional level, there are numerous contacts between the support agencies for the homeless ('Wohnungslosenhilfe') and the police. This qualitative study examines these contacts with the police by analysing experiences and perceptions both front the homeless and social workers in the support agencies for the homeless. Homeless people develop individual strategies to avoid the contact with the police. However, these interactions ar not only characterized by conflicts. Important factors for non-conflict encounters and interactions between the homeless and the police are the age of the police officers, their unit, and the kind of addressing the homeless. Important characteristics of the homeless, that engender non-conflict encounters are the length of time the homeless person has been on the streets, for how long they have been known to the police, how vulnerable they are and how much they care about their appearance in public.'
