'Oscar Lewis' notion of a 'culture of poverty' extends beyond low income to such immaterial dimensions as lack of social integration, segregation, discrimination, instable family patterns, fatalism, apathy and deficient coping inventories. Using survey data and methods developed in stress and coping research, this article addresses the topic of whether effects of a culture of poverty may be proved in the behaviour of the poor German population as defined by income criteria. The poor turn out to cope in a slightly more emotion-oriented manner but they are just as problem focused as the population average. Yet, they are markedly more likely to face social and psychological stressors as they encounter everyday economic shortcomings.' (author's abstract)|... view less
