(Autorenreferat)... view less

'This article follows the question whether formal education serves as a resource in coping with life-crises. Starting from the assumption that education as cultural capital is still of particular importance in modern societies for having success in the life-course, that means education is an important determinant for life standard, life quality, life style, and with that for coping with economic crises. However the point at issue is whether education as cultural capital could help to cope with non-material crises, e.g. in private relations or with high work stress and/or with daily hassles or critical life events. To analyse these question it will be developed an ideal-typical model of the stress process, which shows that a failure in coping could result in negative consequences for well-being and health. Based on data from a youth health survey from 1993 in Germany (N = 2380) and a survey of adults (N = 3003) it will be shown how often negative consequences of coping failures result in psychosomatic problems. With data from a comparative survey of youth from West and East German towns (Chemnitz and Bielefeld) it is analysed, whether formal education, expectations of competences and interpretations of coping capacities moderate the stress process. Finally, some consequences for daily school routines are discussed.' (author's abstract)|... view less
