Abstract

'A multiattributive model of attitude, the attitude theory of Fishbein based on value x expectancy theory is presented and empirically tested using two ALLBUS-surveys (ALLBUS 1990; ALLBUS 1996). The attitude theory proposed by Fishbein is used to explain xenophobic attitudes towards migrant workers, foreigners and Jews in Germany. The great explanatory power of this simple attitude theory is particularly demonstrated in comparison to socio-demographic predictors belonging to the 'variable-sociology' approach within 'traditional' empirical social research like age, education, political left- and right-wing orientation, and the frequency of social contacts with members of the respective foreign groups.'
