Self-Control und gesundheitsrelevantes Verhalten

Self-control and health-related behavior

'The report focuses on the theoretical and empirical analysis of health-related behaviors from the perspective of Self-Control Theory introduced by Gottfredson/Hirschi (1990). Starting from the general hypothesis that Self-Control affects health behavior, the article discusses the relationships between Self-Control and preventive behavior, health-related habits, self-care activities to prevent illness, and avoidance of risk factors. A survey was carried out with a sample of 837 adults. The empirical findings support the main assumptions of Self-Control Theory. The strength of the relationships between Self-Control and the given aspects of health-related behavior differs: While Self-Control turned out to be more efficient in explaining self-care to prevent illness, preventive behavior and avoiding of risk factors, the activities carefully directed to prevent illness are influenced to a lesser degree.'
