'While the concept social control has played a major role within the sociology of deviant behavior it has won new actuality in the field of sociological theory building in connection with discussons about societal processes of individualization. After a short reconstruction of the 'career' of the concept of social control we analyze the postulated change of modi of control elicited by these processes of individualization and discuss the question whether the postulated trend from outer control to self-control is acompanied by a process that makes agencies of social control more and more elusive and leads to new forms of social control. We compare several variants of individualization theory with regard to those aspects and develop some ideas about future trends in the development of social control.'
