This paper focuses on the Hungarian state owned and central controlled universities, which are facing a significant transformation period. Hungarian universities, however, are still being managed and financed using methods and practices that have been inherited from the socialist times, while the competitive environment is increasingly demanding higher standards and more sophistication. The paper presents evidence and some calculations of the scenarios of Hungarian universities as knowledgebased centres. This approach is quite novel in Hungary and might meet some confronting attitudes, though this proposition should stand the test of time.... view less
