(Autorenreferat)... view less

'Political candidates are of interest to political science research at any time, not only in election years. The perception of political candidates by the general public is a recurring and favourite topic. Both the use of different measurement instruments and differences in quality across instruments creates problems for careful research. Comparisons over time are not always possible and dimension to be tapped by a given measure is sometimes unclear. In the paper we try to develop an 'ideal' measure for candidate orientations; one which provides more detailed information than most of the standardly used instruments, but is nonetheless economical. Methodological issues are discussed first, together with the range of personal qualities relevant when assessing candidate perceptions. Second, alternative measures of overall candidate evaluations are compared in terms of their content and their quality of measurement. Structural equation models show the different impacts they have on people's preferences for a German chancellor. Finally, a number of questions are proposed for measuring evaluations of candidates in future.' (author's abstract)|... view less
