Zur Messung des Berufsprestiges: Aktualisierung der Magnitude-Prestigeskala auf die Berufsklassifikation ISCO88

Measuring occupational prestige: updating the magnitude-prestige-scale to ISCO88

(Autorenreferat)... view less

'The Magnitude-Prestige-Scale (MPS) is a tool for operationalising the social position of occupations in empirical surveys. In contrast to alternative instruments such as the Standard International Occupational Prestige Scale (SIOPS) or the International Socioeconomic Index of Occupational Status (ISEI), the MPS is an instrument that was constructed for analyses on the national level only. While the downside of this is that it maynot be used in internationally comparative research, it also brings about the advantage that the instrument better matches national particularities in the hierarchy of positions. Unfortunately, up until now the MPS is only available for the older 1968 version of the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO) and for the 'Classification of Occupations'-Scheme (Klassifizierung der Berufe/ KldB) used in German official statistics. A version of the scale that builds on the more recent 1988 version of the ISCO - which is far more popular in scientific survey research than is the KldB - is not yet available. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to provide a version of the MPS for the ISCO88 classification scheme.' (author's abstract)|... view less
