Outliers and missing values in time series analysis: their modeling within the framework of the Box/Jenkins approach

'Statistical methods of time series analysis have as yet rarely been applied within sociological research. This is partly to be explained by the fact that available time series data frequently do not meet assumptions that are constitutive for the statistical models considered for application. Outliers and missing values are often part of the problem. They tend to produce misspecifications and biased estimation of model parameters. Recently, an iterative method for jointly estimating outliers and missing values together with the model parameters has been developed within the framework of Box and Jenkins. Cast in comfortable software language, this procedure promises to improve considerably the praxis of time series analysis within the social sciences.' (author's abstract)|... view less
