Abstract 'In einem einzigartigen sozialwissenschaftlichen Feldexperiment wurde in den letzten Jahren eine alternative Nutzungspraxis des Automobils getestet. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich eine fortgeschrittene 'Zurichtung' moderner Lebensweisen auf das Automobil, die auch mit finanziellen Anreizen nicht wesentlich verändert werden kann. Ein erfolgreiches Funktionsäquivalent muss mit den vom Auto geprägten Raum- und Zeitstrukturen zurechtkommen, in der Nutzung völlig routinefähig sein und eine hohe Emotionalität generieren können. Die Messlatte für die Alternativen zum privaten Auto liegt somit viel höher als beim Start des Feldexperiments vermutet.' (Autorenreferat)

'In a five-year field experiment begun in 1998 in the WZB research unit on Innovation and Organization, the project group on mobility set about probing alternatives to private car ownership, testing several options, and analyzing environmental and transport policy. The group took the unusual step of setting up a company, choice, together with the automotive manufacturer Audi AG, the Berlin Transport Company (BVG), and StattAuto Carsharing AG. The German Railway Company (Deutsche Bahn AG) became a fourth partner in 2001.' (author's abstract)|
