Review: Graham Gibbs (2009). Analysing Qualitative Data

Abstract

The reviewed book concentrates on the issue of qualitative data analysis. It primarily provides practical information for students and social researchers on how to deal with textual data starting with data preparation until writing the actual report. The book proposes coding as a convenient and effective way to process data. But, what is additionally valuable, it suggests multiple comparative analysis techniques which would allow a researcher to go beyond simple "coding and retrieving" in order to achieve more plausible and in-depth interpretations. Apart from this, it introduces a reader to the analysis of biographies and narratives, as well as to computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS). The book is full of practical advice, with a lot of how-to-do suggestions and useful examples, as well as indications of the possible difficulties in the analysis. Still, even if the book seems to be kept on an elementary level, it would have helped readers to better apply proposed practical advice to their research, if, before reading the book, they had acquired more general knowledge about the specificity of qualitative analysis and the various approaches used within it.

El libro reseñado se concentra en el tema del análisis de datos cualitativos. En primera instancia brinda información práctica para estudiantes e investigadores sociales sobre cómo trabajar con datos textuales desde la preparación de dichos datos hasta la redacción del informe. El libro propone a la codificación como un modo conveniente y efectivo de procesar datos. Pero lo que es valioso, adicionalmente, es que sugiere múltiples técnicas de análisis comparativo que permitirían al investigador ir más allá de la simple "codificación y recuperación" con el fin de lograr interpretaciones más plausibles y profundas. Además, introduce al lector al análisis de biografías y narrativas, así como al análisis cualitativo de datos asistido por computadora (CAQDAS). El libro tiene abundantes consejos prácticos, con variedad de sugerencias del tipo "cómo hacer" y ejemplos útiles, así como también indicaciones de las posibles dificultades en el análisis. Pero aún cuando el libro parece mantenerse en un nivel elemental, podría ayudar a los lectores a aplicar mejor los consejos prácticos para sus investigaciones, si, antes de leer el libro, hubieran adquirido un mayor conocimiento general sobre la especificidad del análisis cualitativo y diversas aproximaciones utilizadas en éste.

Das hier besprochene Buch befasst sich mit qualitativer Datenanalyse. Hierzu bietet es vor allem praktische Hinweise für Studierende und Sozialwissenschaftler/innen zum Umgang mit textuellen Daten von der Erhebung bis zur Veröffentlichung. Insbesondere Kodieren wird als geeignete und effektive Strategie des Umgangs mit Daten vorgeschlagen. In diesem Zusammenhang besonders hervorhebenswert ist, dass Analysetechniken vorgeschlagen werden, die über ein einfaches "Kodieren und Retrieval" hinausreichen und tiefgehendere Interpretationsprozesse unterstützen. Zusätzlich werden Lesende über Biografie- und Narrationsanalysen informiert sowie über die Nutzung computer-gestützter Analysesoftware. Das Buch enthält neben vielen praktischen Hinweisen und hilfreichen Beispielen auch Verweise auf mögliche Probleme im Verlauf der Analyse. Obwohl das Buch um die Vermittlung auch sehr elementarer Informationen bemüht ist, wäre es für Lesende sinnvoll, wenn sie bereits über einiges Vorwissen über die Besonderheiten qualitativer Datenanalyse und die Breite qualitativer Methodologien verfügen, um die zahlreichen Vorschläge tatsächlich in der eigenen Forschung nutzen zu können.
