%X Social contact between people with experiences in psychiatric support leads to the possibility of mutual exchange of experiences. Communal psychiatric institutions like psychosocial contact- and counselling institutions, which are characteristic of open structure and the principle of equality, provide ideal circumstances for these developments. In a qualitative research interaction among visitors of a counselling institution was analysed. Interaction among other people with experiences in psychiatric counselling brings about specific challenges for the people concerned: dealing with social rules and standards, handling previous psychiatric experience and interacting with professional staff. This process is characterised by periods of identification and separation. To promote the potential of self-help in this kind of social contact, professionals as well as people without experiences in mental illness are encouraged to open the dialogue with visitors of these counselling institutions.
