Abstract	"Orientiert an Bourdieus theoretischen Ansätzen zur Soziologie des Sports beschreibt und analysiert der Beitrag die Entwicklung des Tennis in Österreich von den Anfängen bis zum Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs und in den letzten drei Jahrzehnten. Die Untersuchung basiert auf historischem Quellenmaterial sowie auf Umfrageergebnissen, Vereinsstatistiken und einschlägiger Literatur. Es wird gezeigt, dass sich das Tennis zunächst als 'Gesellschaftsspiel' der oberen sozialen Schichten entwickelte. Nur allmählich setzte sich die sportliche Seite des Spiels durch. Am Beginn und im letzten Viertel des vorigen Jahrhunderts entwickelte sich das Tennis boomartig. Dabei lassen sich Versuche feststellen, den durch die Verbreitung der Sportart erzeugten Distinktionsverlust auszugleichen. Der Rückgang des Tennis um die Jahrtausendwende ist in Zusammenhang mit diesem Distinktionsverlust zu sehen." (Autorenreferat) "The article is inspired by Bourdieu's theoretical approach for sports sociology, focusing on the evolution of tennis in Austria in two periods: from the historical beginnings until World War I and during the last three decades. Source-referring, the research incorporates historical data, survey results, club statistics and relevant literature. It can be demonstrated that originally tennis represented a social game of the upper-classes. Only slowly it developed to a serious sport. Tennis boomed during the beginning and the last quarter of the twentieth century, and we can see attempts to compensate the loss of distinction caused by the popularisation of this sport. The current decline of tennis, at the turn of the millennium, reflects this loss of distinction." (author's abstract)
