'When kids enter school, they already have internalised ideas about femininity and masculinity along existing social norms. These ideas pattern their behaviour, perceptions and expectations about the others. This article analyses how children, on the basis of a constructivist theory of socialisation, actively use their knowledge to present themselves as boys and girls. However, their behaviour should be analysed in terms of the school as a 'gendered organisation', and in terms of the teachers themselves, who are conditioned by gender norms and rules while pretending to behave in a gender neutral manner. There is some empirical evidence that in a number of situations the importance of gender diminishes, because other factors structure the situation and the interactions more strongly.'
