"The article asks, whether popular entertainment programmes lead to a joint social media reception in families. This question is raised because current television rarely broadcasts programmes for the whole family. An analysis of conversational and observational data of families, watching the casting-show Starmania, indicates that only in the more educated families the reception of the show brings the family together. In less educated families, the reception of Starmania resembles an individual experience. Furthermore, the casting-show and its candidates were helpful for children and young people in the process of finding their identity and social orientation." (author's abstract)... view less
