"Nicolas Sarkozy won a solid victory in the French presidential elections on 6 May 2007, with 53.32 percent of the vote. The election victory is particularly noteworthy because it seemed within reach for the left – after five difficult years for the conservative government (CPE crisis, rejection of the EU constitutional treaty, civil unrest in the suburbs) and the defeat of the right wing parties in regional elections in 2004. Against this background, how can Sarkozy’s clear victory be explained? During the election campaign, Nicolas Sarkozy deliberately chose topics that initially did not appear to suit him, instead of leaving their development to chance. Pursuing this strategy he was able to turn the debate, especially in the socio-economic field, to his favour. As former home secretary, he was not afraid to put sensitive topics such as criminality, immigration and integration on his political agenda and thus did not leave this field to the far-right Front National. He took advantage of the fact that the debate in French society since 11 September 2001 increasingly focused on these issues. Finally, Nicolas Sarkozy won the presidential elections because of his ability to aptly exploit the media by breaking taboos purposefully in order to determine the course of the election campaign."
