(Autorenreferat)... view less

"In the debate on reforms of labour market policies national governments and international organizations increasingly foster lesson-drawing from the experience of other countries. However, the workhorse model of political science for explaining reforms in labour market policies is mainly comparative, excluding interactions between countries. This contribution investigates the potential forms, channels and causes of international diffusion in national labour market policies. In particular, it deals with two debates of reform: the activation of labour market policies and the reduction of social transfers for the unemployed. Empirical estimations indicate that national policies of neighbour countries do affect each other. This is hardly the impact of lesson-drawing but rather of economic competition between countries."
