The Qualitative Experiment is a both new and old method of empirical social research. It may be defined as an 'operation of a (social) object to explore its structure', i. e. as the explorative, heuristic form of the experiment. Systematic analyses of methods of social science shows the place, meaning and general applicability of the Qualitative Experiment. History shows that it was employed in famous studies during the first half of this century. Its methodology is discussed, it is the same in all qualitative approaches. General heuristic principles are maximizing/ minimizing, testing the limits and adaption. Six specific techniques are demonstrated with examples from textanalysis and social psychology. Further on it is shown that experiments in thought processes and ex-post-facto-experiments may be developed into Qualitative Experiments and should play an important part in social research. Ethical concerns are less serious than those involved in standard (quantitative) experiments.... view less
