'Patterns of marriage behaviour are a subject that is situated on the crossroads between historical demography, social and cultural history. Thus it allows a cooperation between disciplines that otherwise stand on different sides. While cultural history examines aspects like the changes in the attitude towards marriage, social history gets its bearings by the paradigm of ressource transfer and historical demography by the function of marriage as a demographic regulator in the 'Ancien Regime'. All these aspects underwent a change that is only unsufficiently characterised by the generic term of modernisation. Before the relations between the particular aspects of marriage patterns can be investigated, the existing discipline-specific theories should be checked. Taking the example of historical demography, it is shown that historical case studies have lead to a modified view of the explanations of Malthus or Mackenroth, and that we are still far from a deeper understanding of the transition from the so-called eastern to the western marriage pattern.'
