'Since 1981 the historical demography section of the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales has researched French geographical and social mobility during the 19th and 20th centuries. Directed by J. Dupaquier, this massive project seeks to trace genealogically the male descendants of 3000 couples, married between 1803 and 1832 until the present day. Preliminary returns from this rich multidimensional data base suggest some modifications in E. A. Wrigley's interpretation. Moreover, they dramatize the collapse of kinship in schematic diagrams, although M. Segalen raises some counterquestions of her own.' (author's abstract)... view less
