(psz)... view less

'This articel describes and evaluates the most comprehensive and systematic source known to date, of information on individual who were British soldiers during the First World War: the Army's collection of 2-3 millions of soldiers service files, still closed to the general public. The technical and methodological complexities of using these files are assessed, with special emphasis on the problem of representativeness. Two separate sections are devoted to the process of data base creation through sampling and coding. Contrary to common belief, a quantitative analysis proves the data - in their entirety - to be representative of the wartime ranks, sensitive to short time fluctuations and remarkable accurate in portraying sub-groups within the population.'
