Natürliche und klimatische Faktoren hatten immer einen bedeutenden Einfluß auf die historische Entwicklung Rußlands. Ein Großteil der Unterschiede zwischen Rußland und Westeuropa läßt sich aus der unterschiedlichen Bodenfruchtbarkeit, den Ernteerträgen und den daraus folgenden agrikulturellen Arbeitszyklen erklären.
